Two Goals, Including OT Winner

12/30/2011 12:39 AM -

Eric Staal scored two goals, including the overtime winner, and added an assist in the Hurricanes’ 4-3 win over Toronto on Thursday.

TSN

Analysis:

It hasn’t been a season to remember for Staal, who entered this game with just 20 points (7g-13a) and a dismal (-22) in 38 games. Moreover, he had not recorded a point in his previous six games. Staal is a consistent 70-point scorer, so now might be the time to trade for him at a discount, even if Carolina continues to stumble.

Gets Booed, Scores Anyway

12/30/2011 12:35 AM -

Jaromir Jagr scored a goal in the Flyers’ 4-2 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday.

NHL.com

Analysis:

Jagr was booed mightily by the Penguins fans, likely for turning his back on the Pens this offseason to sign with the rival Flyers. Max Talbot, another former Penguin, scored an empty-net goal to seal the deal for the Flyers. Jagr has 31 points (12g-19a) and a +12 in 32 games, so he still has it after spending the previous three seasons in the KHL.

League Leader In Shutouts

12/29/2011 3:00 AM -

Jonathan Quick stopped all 38 shots he faced in the Kings’ 2-0 win over Chicago on Wednesday.

NHL.com

Analysis:

Quick currently leads the NHL with five shutouts. He also has wins in four of his last five games, the last four under new head coach Darryl Sutter.

Scores Two In Caps’ Win

12/29/2011 2:55 AM -

Alexander Semin scored two goals in the Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

NHL.com

Analysis:

A onetime 40-goal scorer, Semin has underwhelmed this season with just nine goals, 17 points, and a (-5). He has shown signs of turning it around recently, scoring four goals in his last five games.

Lehtonen Activated, Robidas On IR

12/28/2011 10:44 PM -

The Dallas Stars have activated Kari Lehtonen and place Stephane Robidas on IR.

NHL.com

Analysis:

Richard Bachman’s run as a starter will likely end as a result. Lehtonen was having a solid season before his injury (13-4-1, 2.35 GAA), so get him back into your lineup as soon as possible.

Doing Light Exercise

12/28/2011 10:39 PM -

Sidney Crosby is exercising lightly, although he is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms with no timetable for his return.

TSN

Analysis:

This news may sound like a glimmer of hope for a Crosby return, but he is in a similar position that he was during his 11-month layoff. Don’t expect him to return anytime soon.

Stays Behind From Road Trip

12/27/2011 7:01 PM -

Chris Higgins has not joined the Canucks on their three-game road trip this week, as he has a hand problem believed to be related to a staph infection on his foot from earlier this season.

TSN

Analysis:

Higgins’ hand has swollen up similar to his foot earlier this season, so he may have caught some kind of virus. If the swelling is short term, then Higgins will join the Canucks on the road trip at some point. For now, assume that he will miss Wednesday’s game against San Jose.

Out Indefinitely With Concussion

12/27/2011 2:35 PM -

Shea Weber will be sidelined indefinitely with a concussion.

TSN

Analysis:

Weber was hit by Mark Fistric during Friday’s game and had to miss Monday’s game. The Predators have recalled Ryan Ellis to replace Weber, who was putting up big numbers this season (29 points and a +14 in 35 games). His production will be difficult for fantasy owners to replace.

On IR With Concussion-Like Symptoms

12/27/2011 2:32 PM -

John-Michael Liles has been placed on injured reserve with concussion-like symptoms.

TSN

Analysis:

Liles’ injury was originally diagnosed as a neck injury. He is tied for fourth in Leafs’ scoring with 21 points (4g-17a), so his offensive production will be missed. Move him to your team’s IR if you can.

Out Indefinitely With Concussion

12/27/2011 2:29 PM -

Simon Gagne will be sidelined indefinitely with a concussion after leaving Monday’s game in the third period.

TSN

Analysis:

Gagne has 17 points (7g-10a) in 34 games this season. His fantasy owners should probably look for another option unless he can be kept on IR.
