Placed On IR

12/31/2011 8:13 PM -

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Tyler Bozak on injured reserve after he crashed into the boards during Friday’s practice.

TSN

Analysis:

Tim Connolly is expected to take Bozak’s place on the Leafs’ top line alongside Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul. Bozak will miss the next week at a minimum with the injury, which wasn’t specifically described.

Out Indefinitely With Concussion

12/31/2011 8:11 PM -

Victor Hedman will be sidelined indefinitely with a concussion.

TSN

Analysis:

Ironically, the defenseman that laid out one of the hits that sidelined Sidney Crosby long-term is out with a concussion of his own. The second overall pick in 2009 was averaging over 22 minutes per game for the Bolts.

Out For Four Weeks

12/31/2011 12:30 AM -

Matt Duchene is expected to miss at least the next four weeks with a knee injury.

Denver Post

Analysis:

Duchene’s knee was injured when he caught his skate in a rut during Thursday’s game against Phoenix. Further tests will be done once the swelling subsides on the knee, so there is a possibility that he could be out longer.

Out For “Weeks” Following Fight

12/31/2011 12:26 AM -

According to Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, Christian Ehrhoff will “miss some time … probably weeks” after Ehrhoff left the game following a first-period fight.

TSN

Analysis:

Ruff did not disclose the type of injury that his defenseman suffered. Ehrhoff, who signed a ten-year free agent contract in the offseason, has not been a star for fantasy teams (17 points and a -11 in 36 games). Move him to your bench.

Starting To Find His Way

12/31/2011 12:23 AM -

Alex Ovechkin scored two goals in the Capitals’ 3-1 win over Buffalo on Friday.

TSN

Analysis:

Ovechkin, a first overall pick in many fantasy leagues, is starting to find his way following indifferent play for much of the season. He has five goals in seven games and now sits at 14 goals on the season.

Placed On Waivers Again

12/30/2011 7:39 PM -

The New York Rangers have placed Sean Avery on waivers.

TSN

Analysis:

Assuming that he clears waivers, Avery will be assigned to the AHL’s Connecticut Whale. Avery has been a healthy scratch for the Rangers’ last nine games, so he doesn’t seem to be in the Rangers’ plans anymore. He should not be owned in any fantasy leagues.

Suffers Knee Injury

12/30/2011 3:17 AM -

Brenden Morrow left Thursday’s game against Columbus in the second period after his left knee was hit by a puck.

ESPN

Analysis:

Morrow has missed time this season because of that same injured knee, so he was probably taken out of the game as a precaution. However, his status for Saturday’s game against Boston remains unclear.

Fractures Ankle On Thursday

12/30/2011 3:13 AM -

James Wisniewski reportedly suffered a fractured ankle in Thursday’s game against Dallas.

Columbus Dispatch

Analysis:

Wisniewski took a puck to his leg during the second period. He may not be out for the season, but it sounds like he will miss at least a few weeks. It has not been a memorable first season in Columbus for Wiz, who started the season with an eight-game suspension and currently holds a dreadful (-18) rating.

Injures Knee On Thursday

12/30/2011 3:09 AM -

Matt Duchene left Thursday’s game against Phoenix in the first period with a knee injury.

TSN

Analysis:

Duchene will be re-evaluated on Friday, but he was wearing a knee brace after the game. Check back for further updates, but it sounds like he will miss some time.

Wonder Twins Zap Ducks

12/30/2011 3:07 AM -

Henrik Sedin scored a goal and added two assists, while Daniel Sedin scored two goals in the Canucks’ 5-2 win over Anaheim on Thursday.

TSN

Analysis:

Not a surprise, but the twins are both in the top five in NHL scoring. With 45 points, Hank is only one point behind Claude Giroux for the NHL scoring lead. Daniel is in a three-way tie for third place, just two points behind his brother. With 17 goals, Daniel has seven more goals than Henrik, however.
